Emulating sound chips in vintage consoles can be a bit of a dark art. There have been many attempts in the past, including Plogue’s excellent chip sounds <\/a>or sample-based techniques<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People frequently debate how to get the most authentic emulation of the original game hardware. Emulating game chips authentically is a bit of a dark art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One way to get closer to the authentic sound of the original hardware is to forgo emulation or sampling and use the hardware itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gameboy has had synthesizer packs for years<\/a>. The NES has had similar as well<\/a>. But the SNES has always been a tougher nut to crack<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the SNES chip is capable of basic synthesis, most of the most iconic scores of the console came from heavy reliance on samples rather than synthesizing sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting this sample-based\/chip-based approach is like bridging two audio worlds that could only exist in a very specific time or place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can’t wait to try out the Super MIDI-Pak to see just exactly how they managed to pull it off. Until now, one of the most reliable ways to get SNES-like audio is through Plogue’s Chipsynth SFC<\/a>, but this might be the new holy grail for SNES purists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is unclear how many presets and samples the Super MIDI-Pak comes with, but we can’t wait to try it out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
